Winter Retreat in Begon, France.
As the winter chill enveloped the picturesque countryside of Begon, France, near Lyon, I found myself embracing the winter joys with my son in the cosy gite with my friends. Our getaway became the perfect haven for board games, cocktails, and movie nights. Yet, this winter retreat held more than just relaxation; it was an opportunity to reconnect with a long-standing passion that had been tucked away, much like the woodworking tools in my father’s workshop.
A highlight of my trip was the chance to explore my friend Trev's new woodworking course. Stepping into the workshop, I was greeted by the familiar and comforting scent of sawdust—a scent that instantly transported me back to my childhood. My father, a talented carpenter, specialized in crafting intricate, twirly handrails for the homes of the rich and famous. The workshop was his domain, filled with tools that sparked my imagination and fuelled a lifelong love for woodworking.
While my career path led me to teaching—a decision I’ve cherished—I had always felt a pull towards carpentry, much like my father. This winter, I finally indulged in that passion, crafting a mallet with my own hands. The experience was not only a creative outlet but also a nostalgic journey that reminded me of the joy of working with wood.
The time spent in Begon was a period of true rest and reflection. I find myself rejuvenated and eager to channel this newfound energy into my work at Mpops Art School. With plans to develop Art Award courses for my students, excited to incorporate well-deserved awards for their dedication and hard work.
Our winter holiday for me was a revival of passions and a celebration of craftsmanship. As I look forward to creating enriching experiences for my students, I carry with me the inspiration and tranquillity that these winter days brought. Whether you’re a teacher, a craftsman, or both, there’s nothing quite like the joy of rediscovering what you love. As the new year unfolds, let us embrace our passions and share them with those around us, making each moment count.
